Hey guys, it’s Philly Boy Jay, back with another quick and delicious frozen collard greens recipe. This week I’ve shown you guys how to cook a variety of frozen vegetables and talked about the seasonings and ingredients I like to use.

Cooking frozen collard greens sounds easy, but there’s more to it than you think. The number one complaint I get from my subscribers and followers about cooking vegetables is not knowing how long to cook them.

They either cook them too long, and their vegetables end up soft and limp, or they don’t cook them long enough, and they come out semi-raw and crunchy. “I’m going to show you how I like to make frozen collard greens, and what ingredients I use to pack them with flavor so good, they’ll be your go-to side dish.

Well, maybe not  good, but you get the point lol. When making frozen collard greens, the goal is quick and simple, so I skip the onions, peppers, meat, and other extras I use for fresh greens.

But I do use the perfect combination of ingredients and seasonings that’ll make them taste just as good as fresh greens. When I make greens, I always use frozen greens, unless I’m making them for Thanksgiving or a big occasion!

Listen, during the weekdays, after work, the last thing we wanna do is be in the kitchen washing, chopping, and doing all the other laborious preparation that comes with cooking fresh greens. We just wanna warm up some vegetables real quick to complete our meal.

Essential ingredients for frozen collard greens:

  • Apple cider vinegar: I don’t care if I’m making frozen, bagged, or fresh greens, the three ingredients that are a must are Lawry’s Seasoning Salt, Sugar, and Apple Cider Vinegar. Those 3 ingredients are what set my greens apart. I use ACV to give the greens their traditional tart flavor.
  • Sugar: I use a small amount of sugar to balance out the acidity level and the bitterness from the garlic, onions, and vinegar. I’m a huge fan of Lawry’s Seasoned Salt (I use it in many recipes as a salt replacement).
  • Laury’s Seasoning: Salt is essential for great flavor, but for collard greens, I always go with seasoning salt. If you don’t have any seasoning salt on hand, don’t worry, just use regular salt. It won’t alter the taste much. Just make sure that if you do use salt, to use a little less—not the same amount—because it’s a little more potent than seasoning salt.
  • Chicken Broth: Another ingredient that’s pivotal in providing flavor is the broth, I use chicken broth. If you don’t have broth on hand, feel free to use more Lawry’s seasoning.
  • Hot Sauce: My nana would also add a pinch of hot sauce and cayenne or hot pepper flakes to add a little heat to the greens once they were done. That’s optional, of course, because not everyone enjoys spicy foods. I’ll tell ya one thing though, a lil’ pepper flakes or cayenne pepper can only help your immune system when you’re trying to get rid of a cold! I’m just saying… I’m just saying lol!

Description

Juicy, soul-food style collard greens seasoned with Lawry’s Seasoning Salt, then cooked in broth. Often served as a side dish, this tastes great with cornbread, ribs, and potato salad.


Ingredients

  • 1 Lb (16 oz) Frozen Chopped Collard Greens
  • 2 Cups Chicken Broth
  • 11/2 Tbs Butter
  • 2 Tsps Apple Cider Vinegar
  • 11/2 Tbs Sugar
  • 11/2 Tsp Seasoning Salt or to taste
  • 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder 
  • 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder
  • 1/4 Tsp Black Pepper
  • 1/8 Tsp Cayenne Pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1.  Place a skillet over high heat then add in the broth.
  2.  After 3 minutes, or when the broth comes to a boil, reduce the heat to medium high.
  3. Add the collard greens, butter, vinegar, seasonings, and sugar, then stir well.
  4. Let the greens cook for 17-18 minutes or until desired tenderness.
    (Stir periodically)

Notes

  • If you don’t like your greens on the spicy side, leave out the cayenne pepper!

  1. Loved your recipe! I used my seasoning salt on hand and substituted the butter for good ol’ bacon grease and added more chicken broth toward the end. I also added chopped onions. Delicious pairing with my Crockpot Pork chops w/potatoes and carrots. Just the recipe I needed since I had frozen collards on hand. Perfect also because I had ALL the ingredients at home so a budget friendly plus recipe. Looking forward to trying other recipes listed. Keep up the good work!!!

  8. So I never made collard greens like this before. I usually just add them to a frittata, so I had a bag and left over ham. Also threw in a bag of frozen peppers and onions. My kitchen smells so good. Made up some corn bread and bam. Simple supper. Thank you!!! My boys loved it too.






  9. Easy, quick, tasty. Yep it’s not the ham hock – 2 hour recipe, but works great if you’ve got a frozen bag. I threw in some bacon bits too.






  10. Mistakenly grabbed collard greens instead of Frozen spinach so I tried this recipe. Very simple but tasty. Added a tiny extra bit of ACV to brighten it up near the end. Thumbs up!!

Are you on a diet? Or sick? Diabetes?? Instead of Soul-Food Style Collards, you should name them, Nursing Home Collards!

    1. I would like to reply to Shirley’s comment. It was exactly the same thoughts I had! How do you cook collards in 15 minutes and without any meat? I even read the recipe twice to see if I missed using a ham hock or bacon!
