Slow Cooker Smothered Turkey Wings

Tender, savory, slow cooker smothered turkey wings. Slow-cooked in a crockpot with onions, peppers, and rich gravy. They’re hearty, delicious, and the perfect comfort dish for a brisk winter night.

Slow Cooker Smothered Turkey Wings

Hey folks, it’s Jay, and I’m back with another soul food recipe. Today, I’ll show you how I slow-cook my turkey wings in a little ole crockpot. This dish is comfort food at its best.

It is the perfect dinner during those cold winter months. If there was a picture next to the word “HEARTY” in the dictionary, there would be a plate of these savory, bone-sucking turkey wings right next to it!!!

This recipe is a total fan favorite and highly requested by family and friends—that’s just how amazingly delicious it is. This is easily one of the best slow cooker smothered turkey wings online.

Growing Up on Smothered Turkey Wings

My mother cooked turkey wings a lot during the winter season, especially for Sunday dinner. Coming together and having supper after church was sort of a tradition in my family – something I definitely looked forward to.

The savory gravy is what I loved most about my mother’s turkey wings. She would make a slurry, combining flour with water to thicken it.

The turkey juices and the brown bits from searing are what gave it color and flavor. Since then, I’ve replaced the water with turkey broth to enhance the turkey flavor.

The one thing I really didn’t enjoy was how messy my hands would always get. I advise you to keep a wet cloth close. Things get very sticky after all the finger-licking action. Lol!

Nana Alice & Aunt Pam Hated “Big Ole” Wings

One thing I will never forget growing up is how much my Nana Alice and Aunt Pam hated jumbo wings. They would always call them “baby arms.” That was so funny to me at the time. LOL!

They would ask the butcher for small wings every time we went to the meat market. They told me jumbo wings were only that big because they were injected with steroids to make more meat. Turns out, that was partially true!

To this day, I only buy small to medium turkey wings. Enormous “baby arm” wings freak me out, and I refuse to buy them. But if you like your wings big, by all means, do you.

Set It and Forget It

What I like most about this recipe is how little attention it needs. You can attend to your little ones running wild around the house, do some cleaning, or watch your favorite movie without having to check on it every 20 minutes.

Just sear ’em, drop ’em in the crockpot, and pour in your soup & broth. Let ’em cook until they’re falling off the bone, and drowned in a savory gravy that’ll remind you of ya Grandma’s cookin’.

Watch Me Make It

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • Meat: Turkey wings (small to medium size). They are much easier to manage, and you get more pieces to serve.
  • Vegetable add-ins: Yellow onions, green bell peppers, and minced garlic.
  • Fat: Vegetable oil and butter.
  • Seasonings: Salt, garlic powder, onion powder, ground sage, dried thyme, dried rosemary, and black pepper.

For the gravy

  • Liquid: Turkey broth (low-sodium preferred). Chicken broth works as a great alternative.
  • Thickener: All-purpose flour.
  • Soup: Campbell’s Cream of Chicken (cream of celery or cream of mushroom works great, too).

Cookware & Utensils You’ll Need:

Searing the Wings

A question I get asked often is, “What’s the point of browning and searing the turkey wings?” Here’s why I brown them before adding them to the crockpot:

  • Crisping the skin: Simmering turkey wings in a crockpot for hours leaves the skin soggy, like wet tissue. Searing them beforehand ensures the skin doesn’t end up completely soft when they are done cooking.
  • Enhancing flavor: When you sear the meat, you extract fat, which is rich in flavor. Deglazing the skillet with the rich juices and remnants, then adding them to the crockpot, enhances the overall flavor.

Temperature and Cooking Time

  • High heat: If you plan on being away for under 4 hours, cook the wings on high. It’s a great option if you want them done quickly without using the oven.
  • Low heat: Cook them on low if you’re busy and have the time. You can let them go for 7-8 hours while you’re studying, out shopping, hanging out with friends, at work, or asleep overnight.

Tips for Success

  • Pat the wings dry: Make sure you do this before seasoning and searing. It’s the best way to ensure the skin gets crispy and browns up nicely in the pan.
  • Sautéing the minced garlic: You can toss the garlic right into the crockpot raw. If you choose to sauté it instead, add it to the skillet during the last 2 minutes so it doesn’t burn.
  • Don’t waste the seasoning: If you seasoned your wings in a large bowl, add a little water or broth to rinse off the excess seasoning, then pour it into the crockpot. I even make my slurry in that same bowl to catch every last drop.
  • Stir the gravy: Give it a nice final stir right before removing the turkey wings. This breaks up any hidden lumps and ensures a smooth, even consistency.

What to Serve with Smothered Turkey Wings

If you’re trying to figure out what to serve with your turkey wings, here are some starch and vegetable sides I highly recommend:

  • White rice: Rice is the ultimate classic! Nothing pairs better with rich, savory gravy than a hot bed of white rice. It’s the side I see people pairing with smothered turkey wings the most; it’s truly second to none and for good reason.
  • Egg noodles: Egg noodles make a great alternative to rice because of their neutral flavor. This is easily one of my favorite things to eat with turkey wings, and probably what I make with them the most after rice.
  • Mashed potatoes: Come on now, y’all know mashed potatoes had to make the list! Lol! You can’t talk about gravy without mentioning mashed potatoes. They aren’t number one because the rice-turkey wings combo just hits different, y’all.
  • Green beans: You can’t go wrong here. Green beans are the best vegetable to pair with turkey wings in my opinion. I just think they go so well together.
  • Sweet corn: Some sweet, buttery corn paired with these savory wings gives you that perfect sweet-and-savory combo. It’s easily my second favorite vegetable to pair with turkey wings.

Storage and Reheating

  • How to store smothered turkey wings: Place the wings in either a Tupperware container or a Ziploc bag. Make sure they’re tightly sealed, then place them in the refrigerator.
  • Can you freeze turkey wings? Yes, of course! Just place them in a Ziploc bag, make sure it’s sealed tight to prevent freezer burn, and store them in the freezer. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 months.
  • How to reheat turkey wings in the microwave: Place the wings in a microwave-safe dish and heat them up for 3 minutes. Flip them over halfway through, after 1-and-a-half minutes. If they’re not hot enough, let em go for another minute.
  • How to reheat turkey wings in the oven: Scrape the gravy off the wings, wrap them in aluminum foil, and bake at 350°F until they are hot.
  • How do you fix thick, lumpy gravy? Gravy naturally thickens once it chills. To fix it, place a skillet over low heat, add the gravy along with a few tablespoons of water or broth, and whisk until smooth. Just add a little liquid at a time until it reaches your desired consistency.

Slow Cooked Smothered Turkey Wings FAQs

  • Can you use other turkey parts, like turkey legs? Of course! You can use any turkey part you want, like drumsticks (aka legs), portions, or whole wings. Just stick to the recipe measurements and instructions.
  • Do I have to use cream of chicken? NO!!! I don’t use any at all when I bake my wings. I really only use it when I slow cook my wings because crockpots trap a lot of moisture, which produces a lot of liquid and thins out the gravy. The cream of chicken prevents the gravy from becoming watery and keeps the semi-thick consistency we want.
  • How long do smothered turkey wings last? About 4-5 days in the refrigerator. I don’t wait too long to eat leftovers because food loses its swag over time. Lol!

  1. Hey Jay, this recipe looks amazing! I’ve been looking for a good slow cooker turkey wing recipe for a while. The idea of smothering them with onions and peppers in a crockpot sounds perfect for a cold night. Usually, I wait this long when gaming, like when I jump into a long session on FNF V-Slice. It’s the kind of comfort food that pairs well with some downtime. Do you think you could add a spice level adjustment for future batches? Just curious if cayenne pepper works well in the gravy. Thanks for sharing the details!

  2. These slow cooker smothered turkey wings look absolutely delicious! I love how tender and juicy they appear in the pictures. I can’t wait to try this recipe for my family dinner. Thanks for sharing!

  3. Alexander says:

This recipe is amazing! The recipe says to use 3 cups of turkey broth but in the video it looks like there’s only 1 cup of broth measured out in the jug – which is the right amount?

    1. Cant predict or go by amounts shown in video… always go by what it says on the recipe card 🙂 The video is to just demonstrate how to make it, but cooking creators maybe making more or less in the video. Follow the recipe.

  4. Thanks for sharing! This post is really helpful. also can enjoy the game at accelerationcity.cc

  5. Wow, these turkey wings look incredible! There’s nothing quite like a slow cooker meal simmering all day while you get things done. I actually love pairing this kind of cozy cooking atmosphere with some quiet crafting time myself. Sometimes I’ll set a timer for the crockpot and spend an hour on my perler bead designs in between checking the food. Do you usually let the onions caramelize before adding the gravy, or go straight to the broth? Asking for a friend who’s never quite mastered that step! Thanks for sharing this recipe.

  6. Hey Jay, this recipe looks absolutely delicious! I haven’t tried turkey wings in the crockpot before, but the gravy description has me hooked. There’s nothing like a slow-simmered meal on a cold night. I usually prepare big batches like this when I’m hosting friends for casual get-togethers, sometimes even for longer gaming sessions later in the evening. Speaking of finding relaxing pastimes, I’ve been enjoying some archery-themed titles recently. If you need background fun while prepping dinner, check out this Arrow Games list. Anyway, can’t wait to give this a try. Do you recommend adding a little smoke flavor to the gravy for extra depth? Thanks for sharing!

  7. The wings look delicious! I can’t wait to cook the wings. I see you suggest cooking them for 3 hours. Is that on high or low heat setting?

  45. looks so good will try it

  46. I cooked this on slow cook in my cast iron Dutch pot in my Emeril Lagasse on medium low (325 degrees) for 3:30 hours and it came out delicious. A little broth added to the mixture cuts down on the extreme stickiness.
Next day for breakfast- a wing and some grits. Oh, my goodness!!

  47. Susan D Turner says:

Well unfortunately the turkey itself disappointed. The sauce and the method and everything was delicious but the turkey even though it was advertised as wings I suspect was actually drumsticks because they were huge. DH doesn’t care especially for turkey parts which I had no knowledge of. He only likes turkey breast meat which I didn’t know. He really liked the sauce and wondered if it might be good possibly with chicken which I think it would. I love turkey wings so I guess I’m going to have to sometime make it for myself when I can actually find the right turkey wings these were very strange

    1. I did it with chicken wings. It came out perfect

      1. Yes, you can definitely use pretty much all of these same ingredients for chicken or pork and it will be just as good.

  48. Susan D Turner says:

In the Crock-Pot even as we speak kind of a pain because I had to go out in the garden and harvest herbs but other than that it was great I will update after we taste them!

If I wanted to put them in the oven would I cooked them the same exact way, if not what modifications do I need to make

  51. Used your recipe to fix 1 wing, 1 thigh and 2 legs. After reading remarks I added 2/3 cup of Wild Rice Mix and just put everything in my 6 quart crockpot to cook. It took 6 hours on high for the legs to get to fall off the bone done. It was so good!

  52. Best tasting turkey wings ever! I even ate them for breakfast 😋

  53. AMAZING
    THANK YOU!!!

I used this recipe, but did it with turkey necks! 😱. Also I didn’t have turkey broth so I substituted with chicken broth. This s*#t was delicious!!

  58. Steven Bennett says:

Jay I have a question. On your recipes where it says 1x 2x 3x only the meat portion amount changes.

For a 2x serving do I change all measurements by two? Example if a 1x measurement calls for 1/2 tablespoon of pepper is the 2x measurement 1 whole tablespoon of pepper?

Also I’m making your recipe for turkey wings I plan on using the 2x recipe instead of 10oz of cream of chicken am I using 20oz. Thank you much sir!

That’s an automatic generated feature on this recipe plugin card… I don’t go by that. I would just add a little more of each seasoning but not double it. Tell me how it comes out

The temperature is on high setting right? What if I want to cook it on low for how long

    1. I think about 6 hours on low should be good or until tender.

  100. I cooked this recipe – DELICIOUS without any deviation from the recipe or instructions!

    1. I used water instead of turkey broth. I made this putting approx 2/3 cup brown rice (uncooked) into bottom of crock pot also. Very tasty. Now I just put pork roast into crock pot w/rice. Look forward to eating it!! I put all spices w/about 2-3 tsp canola oil (instead of butter) along with roast, into plastic bag & shake to evenly coat & put in crock pot.
