The BEST Strawberry Lemonade Recipe (Made With Homemade Strawberry Syrup)

Delicious, strawberry lemonade made with fresh lemons, white sugar, and homemade strawberry syrup. The perfect beverage for family dinner and summer cookouts.

Strawberry Lemonade Recipe

Hey guys, it’s September, so it’s still warm outside, but summer is swiftly coming to an end. Before we transition into the holiday season, I want to share one last great beverage with you guys.

I mean, it’s still hot in most parts of the country, so we’re throwing a few last-minute cookouts to close out the summer. This strawberry lemonade is perfect for the occasion.

It’s packed with flavor, super refreshing, and downright delicious. We’re using fresh strawberries, fresh lemons, and a rich homemade strawberry syrup that takes this lemonade up a notch.

I Fell In Love With Strawberry Lemonade At Chick-fil-A

You may find this surprising given how much I love lemonade. But I wasn’t really fond of strawberry lemonade or lemonade in general.

I think what I hated was how artificial and bitter some lemonade can be. I would drink lemonade all the time, but the brand mattered. Not all lemonade is made equal! Lol!

I think I really started to enjoy lemonade when I first tried my Aunt Angie’s version; it was on the sweeter side and not nearly as bitter as your standard store-bought lemonade.

It had that perfect balance and 2:1 sugar-to-lemon-juice ratio. It wasn’t so sharp that I couldn’t drink it down smoothly without squinting and making funky faces! Haha!

If lemonade has a high citrus profile, I probably won’t mess with it. I like lemonade with a mild lemon flavor. Her lemonade tastes very similar to my play aunt Tina’s.

Remember The BEST Homemade Lemonade Recipe (Old-Fashioned Black Folk Lemonade) Tina and I created and shared with y’all a few years back?

If not, check it out, especially if you prefer regular lemonade. Tina and Angie inspired that recipe, and it’s one you absolutely have to try.

Then, I finally came across a strawberry lemonade that I actually fell in love with. Guess where it came from? Chick-fil-A! Haha, I remember the first time I tried their lemonade.

My mom and I stopped by there after leaving Target one day. I think she went to get a spicy chicken meal for my sister; I can’t remember.

Anyway, I got thirsty, and since they mistakenly gave us two drinks, she told me to take one. Let’s say I was hooked after the first sip.

I fell in love instantly. It was so refreshing and perfectly balanced! What I think I liked most about it is how rich and profound the strawberry flavor is, and how easy it was on my palate.

Another thing I liked was that it tasted fresh, like strawberry lemonade someone’s grandma made straight out of her kitchen.

The flavors tasted authentic, not artificial, unlike many lemonades. You can tell they used fresh lemon juice because of the lemon pulp.

The strawberry syrup they used is so sweet and highly concentrated. Every time I’d order a combo from Chick-fil-A, I would get a strawberry lemonade for my drink. Lol!

The funny thing is, I used to look forward to drinking the strawberry lemonade more than to eating the chicken tenders and waffle fries.

It’s been a while since I’ve had their strawberry lemonade. I’m not sure if they changed the recipe or if my taste buds just got tired of it, because the last few times it’s tasted bitter.

That’s when I decided to create my own strawberry lemonade recipe and mimic it as best as I could. So yes, you can thank Chick-fil-A for this recipe. Lol!

What to love about this recipe:

  • Quick: It’s not only easy to make but also takes very little active time. It’s a straightforward recipe, and we all love making something that’s not just good but non-laborious.
  • Easy to make: Macerate the strawberries to create a syrup while boiling the water, then combine with fresh lemon juice and sugar.
  • It’s a fan favorite: I don’t know too many people who don’t like strawberry lemonade, so it’s definitely a drink you won’t have to worry about people not drinking at any social gathering you make it for.

What you need:

  • Spring water: Use your favorite spring water. Do not, and I repeat, do not use spigot water. It will reduce the quality of the strawberry lemonade.
  • Lemons: You need lemons, obviously, because you can’t make lemonade without them. We’ll be squeezing fresh juice from a few fresh lemons. Try to find seedless lemons if you can.
  • Sugar: We’ll use a good brand of white sugar like Domino’s to sweeten the drink and macerate the berries.

Strawberry Syrup:

  • Strawberries: Use fresh strawberries! My favorite is Driscoll’s strawberries because they’re ripe and sweet.
  • Sugar: Paired with the berries to macerate and extract that rich, homemade strawberry syrup.

Add-ins:

  • Strawberries: We’ll add fresh, sliced strawberries directly to the pitcher to enhance flavor and make the beverage look appealing.

Tools:

  • Pitcher: Since we’re making a full batch, use a large gallon-size pitcher. Try to find one with a slotted lid for easy serving.
  • Pot: Use a medium-size to large pot to boil the water.
  • Measuring Cups: You need these to measure ingredients accurately.
  • Large Mixing Bowl: You need a large mixing bowl to clean the strawberries and lemons and macerate the berries.
  • Knife: You’ll need a sharp knife to slice the strawberries and lemons.
  • Masher: To press the strawberries and extract all of that juice.
  • Strainer: You’ll need a strainer to filter out the pulp and seeds for a smooth strawberry syrup.
  • Citrus Juicer: A citrus juicer makes extracting the juice from lemons very easy so you can get every last drop.
  • Big Spoon: You’ll need a big spoon to combine and stir everything together.

Pink vs Strawberry Lemonade

Ok, so there’s something I want to address first, before I dive into the important stuff. Since this is a lemonade recipe, this is the perfect time for me to address this confusion some people have.

PINK and STRAWBERRY lemonade have different meanings.

  • Strawberry lemonade: Strawberry lemonade is ALWAYS made with strawberries and/or strawberry flavoring, such as strawberry syrup, which is why it’s called strawberry lemonade.
  • Pink lemonade: Pink lemonade is sometimes just regular lemonade made with pink food coloring. Sometimes it is made with both pink food coloring and strawberry flavoring; You won’t know until you taste it.

Prepping and cleaning the fruit

Ok, so first things first… cleaning the fruit is a MUST for me! I have seen and opened many packages of strawberries, and let me say, they can all use a makeover. Lol!

Below are my step-by-step instructions for cleaning the raspberries.

  1. Add the fresh strawberries to a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the lemons to a separate mixing bowl.
  3. Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda to each bowl.
  4. Cover both the strawberries and lemons with 2 quarts of water
  5. Thoroughly scrub the lemons with your hands for a good minute to remove the dirt.
  6. Massage the strawberries with your hands to remove the dirt.
  7. After 5 minutes, thoroughly rinse the strawberries and lemons with cool water.
  8. Remove the strawberries from the bowl and lightly pat dry with a paper towel.
  9. Remove the lemons, pat dry, and set aside.
  10. Slice off the leafy calyx from the strawberries and set aside.

What Is Macerating Fruit (And Why It Changes the Game)

If you’ve ever wondered how to get that intense, bakery-level fruit flavor into your drinks without artificial syrups, the secret is maceration.

  • It’s simple kitchen science: Macerating means tossing fresh fruit in sugar and letting it sit.
  • Osmosis does the heavy lifting: The sugar draws out the natural juices locked inside the fruit.
  • Depth of flavor: Letting the fruit sit lets the natural fruit sugars and the added sugar meld. It creates a rich, highly concentrated syrup rather than just sweet water.
  • Better texture: Letting fruit rest softens the cell walls, making it way easier to mash and extract every single drop of flavor.

*Pro Tip: Don’t rush it! Letting your fruit sit for a full hour instead of just 30 minutes gives the sugar more time to break down the cell walls completely. That extra time means maximum juice extraction and a much richer, more robust flavor profile in your finished syrup.

Clearing the Syrup for a Crystal-Clear Finish

When you are working with fresh fruit to build the base for a great homemade strawberry lemonade, one of the most important steps happens right after you finish extracting that syrup.

As the strawberries release their natural juices and break down during maceration and straining, a thick, fuzzy layer of fine pulp, foam, and tiny seed particles naturally rises to the surface.

If you skip this part and pour that cloudy mixture straight into your pitcher, it leaves behind a heavy, murky residue that dulls both the vibrant color and the clean look of ya beverage.

Taking a few extra moments to remove that surface film thoroughly makes all the difference in achieving a professional-grade finish.

Use a fine-mesh strainer or a clean spoon to gently clear away the foam until you are left with a smooth, rich, and translucent strawberry concentrate.

Doing this extra step ensures that your final batch pours out completely crisp, bright, and crystal-clear every single time, giving your strawberry lemonade that high-end look and an ultra-smooth mouthfeel to match its incredible flavor.

How to make strawberry Lemonade

  1. Slice the strawberries in half and set 12 pieces aside for later.
  2. Add the strawberries to a large bowl.
  3. Add 2 cups of sugar and toss until fully coated.
  4. Place in the refrigerator for 1 hour to macerate.
  5. Place a large pot over high heat.
  6. Add 4 quarts of water.
  7. Preheat until it comes to a rolling boil, about 12-15 minutes.
  8. Remove from the heat.
  9. Meanwhile, slice 6 lemons in half.
  10. Extract 1 cup of lemon juice using a citrus juicer.
  11. Pour the lemon juice into a pitcher.
  12. Add the lemon pulp
  13. Add the sliced strawberries.
  14. Add 2 cups of sugar.
  15. Pour in the warm water, then stir well.
  16. Mash the strawberries to release the syrup.
  17. Place a strainer over a bowl.
  18. Pour the syrup into the bowl through the strainer.
  19. Pour the syrup into the pitcher.
  20. Stir well and refrigerate to chill.

Strawberry Lemonade Tips

  • Roll your lemons first: Before you cut and squeeze them, firmly roll your lemons on the counter using the palm of your hand. This breaks down the internal membranes and helps you extract every single drop of juice.
  • Watch out for seeds: If you couldn’t find seedless lemons and ended up with seeded ones, make sure to strain out every seed before they end up in the pitcher. Nobody wants to bite into bitter seeds while trying to enjoy a smooth glass of lemonade. Lol!
  • Watch your strawberry maceration time: Don’t rush it! Give the sugar time to extract the berries’ natural juice. Giving the strawberries and sugar enough time to sit together creates that rich, concentrated syrup that makes this recipe stand out.
  • Give it a good final stir: Before you pour your very first glass, give the whole pitcher a thorough stir from top to bottom. The strawberry syrup and sweetness can sometimes settle toward the bottom as it sits in the fridge, so mixing it right before serving ensures every glass is 100% delicious.
  • Make it ahead of time (it’s a must!): Between prepping your fresh fruit, making the syrup, and letting the water chill, this is non-negotiable. Especially since drinks like this need time for all the ingredients to marry for a deep, rich, and fruity flavor.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can I use frozen strawberries instead of fresh? Fresh is always best for that vibrant, bright flavor and natural color, but in a pinch, you can use frozen strawberries. Just make sure to thaw and drain them completely first, so they don’t water down your batch.
  • Can I use brown sugar, honey, or raw sugar? Stick to white granulated sugar for this one. Scientifically, brown sugar and raw sugar (like Turbinado or Demerara) have larger, coarser crystals and contain molasses or impurities that change how they draw out moisture during the maceration process, meaning you won’t get that same clean, efficient extraction of pure strawberry juice. Flavor-wise, brown sugar, raw sugar, and honey all introduce heavy molasses, caramel, or distinct floral notes that will completely mask or muddy the bright, tart, and fresh fruit notes you want in a crisp strawberry lemonade.
  • Can you use bottled lemon juice? Honestly? Yes, but you really should try to go fresh. You need fresh lemons to get that proper citrus balance and aroma. Bottled juice tastes flat and sometimes artificial in comparison.
  • How long does strawberry lemonade last in the fridge? It will stay fresh for about 3 to 4 days. Because you’ve got fresh fruit syrup in the mix rather than just citrus and water, it has a slightly shorter window—though let’s be real, it’s so good it won’t last that long anyway! Lol!
  • How do I double or triple the recipe? Just scale up all your ingredients proportionally. If you’re doubling it, make sure you use a bigger pot, mixing bowl, and pitcher to hold all that extra water, strawberries, and juice!
