I am absolutely in love with smoothies, and this smoothie right here is EASILY MY FAVORITE. Strawberries and bananas are easily my favorite fruits, so my addiction to this smoothie should be no surprise. Lol!
My first strawberry banana smoothie
A few years back, in 2019-2020, I shared an apartment with my brother, and we would stay up late night playing video games, eating, drinking, and getting lit. Lol! We’d always order a bunch of food Friday’s nights and just stay up vibing and enjoying each others time.
One night, I had a sweet tooth and decided to order some ice cream from one of Philadelphia’s most popular convenience stores, known as WAWA’s, which is an acronym (W)ALK (A)WAY (W)ITH (A)NYTHING!
Well, I end up settling for a strawberry banana smoothie since they were out of ice cream and let’s just say I fell in love after the first sip. It was so good I removed the straw and lid and gulped it down. Lol!
I enjoyed it so much that I end up ordering another one a few minutes later. I had become addicted to strawberry banana smoothies, I even started ordering one every night or at least 3 times per week.
Late night rides to WaWa’s
I even remember my aunt Tina, who you may remember me talking about in my Homemade Lemonade Recipe taking late night trips to Wawa’s. She had trouble sleeping and so did I… we were night owls. So we would often crave something sweet.
I’d order a uber to take us straight from my crib to a far away Wawas in the suburbs. Everybody know it’s rare to find one in Philly nowadays and you have to travel out to the county to find one. But we lived there, it had became our second home.
This particular Wawas was on Baltimore pike not far from Springfield mall was at least a 20-25 mins from my crib. And so I made sure every time we had a sleepless night and went to Wawas, to get 2 smoothies instead of 1.
My brother loved this smoothie
After a few months of buying them, I notice they didn’t make it as good. A few people I come across said they no longer added cream to it but 1% milk. Instead of it being nice thick cold and milky, it started to taste icy like a slushy.
That’s when I decided to create my own strawberry smoothie and to put my own spin on it. The one thing I wanted to do was add more oatmeal because I didn’t think they added enough. 2. Reduce the sugar because sometimes it would be too sweet.
So I decided to create my own Strawberry smoothie and after about 4-5 attempts, I mastered it. My brother Smitty tried it and thought it was delicious. Most recently after several changes to improve the recipe, I let my mother taste it.
She think it’s one of the most delicious strawberry banana smoothies she had. So I said ok, It’s time to make a recipe out of this. I know what ingredients to use, I just had to use the right amounts of each and get the measurements right and after weeks of trying different ingredients and amount, I got it right.
Tools:
Make sure you have all these cooking utensils to make things easy on yourself… if it’s anything you need, click on the links and purchase them on amazon.
- Knife: You need a nice sharp knife to remove the leaves from the strawberries, that’s unless you want to keep them for nutritious purposes.
- Blender: You obviously need the blender to blend everything and make the smoothie.
- Measuring Cup: Use the measuring cup to accurately measure the oats, sugar, milk, and blueberries.
What you need:
- Strawberries: You can use fresh or frozen strawberries. I like to use Driscoll’s strawberries but you can use frozen bagged strawberries. Just use the right amount.
- Bananas: Make sure you get RIPED banana’s! Riped bananas are yellow and brown and they’re sweeter. These the bananas you want to use for a smoothie. The type of bananas you use effect the taste of the smoothie.
- Blueberries (optional): Blueberries are sort of optional here. This is strawberry banana smoothie so if you want a traditional strawberry banana smoothie you’d omit it I guess. But it just color and depth of flavor and I dont add much but one day I did because I only had a few left. Long story short, I like what it did for the smoothie and decided to add it to the recipe.
- Old Fashioned Oatmeal (optional): I love using oatmeal! How much you use is up to you but I think the amount I use is perfect. The Oatmeal helps thicken the smoothie as well.
- White Sugar (optional): Use white sugar for sweetness. If you want to go the healthy route, omit the sugar! You can also replace it with honey or raw sugar.
- Almond Milk: I use creamy almond milk! You can use regular milk if you want. The brand I like to use is “Blue Diamond Almond”.
- Ice: Ice is what chills to smoothie and gets it nice and icy cold and slushy. You can opt to not use ice and freeze your fruit for a while then blend it, but ice will stretch the smoothie.

Freeze Your Fruit!
If you’re anything like me and like your smoothies thick and cold, make sure your strawberries, bananas, and blueberries are cold before preparing it. Sit your fruit in the freezer for at least an hour before preparing the smoothie. This will keep your smoothie nice and cold for a long after making it.
Sometimes I drink my smoothie slowly to bask in it’s deliciousness and even after 20 minutes, the last few drops are still chilled. Ice dilutes the smoothie a bit and using just the fruit makes for a richer more potent smoothie which is another benefit or freezing the fruit to chill the smoothie.
Not your ordinary strawberry banana smoothie
Ok so this is something I wanted to address because I know there will be some people questioning certain ingredients. So the 2 odd ball ingredients that standout are the blueberries and oatmeal.
Let me first start off by saying I add oatmeal to all of my smoothie, why? Because I love how it almost turn the smoothie into a cereal. And it just taste freaking good..
Another ingredient I decided to add were the blueberries. Now, let me be very clear! If you’re allergic to them or just hate blueberries omit. But because I only add a small amount you can barely taste them.
This will still take very much like strawberry and banana. I just add a little because one day when I was making a strawberry banana smoothie and have or 6 little blueberries in a container.
I so badly wanted to trash the container but couldnt because some berries were left in there. So I said forget it… ima just add the blueberries and it added a nice color and touch.
The strawberry banana has a little swag to it now. But yes dont worry, you will barely even notice it and it will taste just like a strawberry banana smoothie,
How to Make a Strawberry Banana Smoothie
- If you’re using fresh strawberries, cut off the leaves.
- To ensure the smoothie is nice and col without having to use ice, sit all the fruit in the freezer until rock hard, and make sure the milk is cold by sitting it in the refrigerator.
Skip this step and just add your ice to the blender if you prefer to do so and dont have hours to wait.-

Smoothie Variations:
Ok so maybe you liked the recipe but want some ideas on how to modify it. Well below are some other common and popular ways people like to make their strawberry banana smoothies.
- Soy milk, Coconut Milk, Oat Milk, or Whole Milk: If almond milk not ya thing, you can use another milk of your choice. Regular whole milk, 1 or 2% milk will do just fine. The only main difference is that it wont taste as rich. You can use soy milk, oat milk, coconut milk or scratch the milk and just use water. This list of milk are the other most commonly used.
- Yogurt: Plain yogurt is commonly added to add thickness and flavor but I’m not big on adding yogurt to smoothies. I feel like if you want a yogurt you should just have a yogurt but to each his own.
- No Oatmeal or Blueberries: For a more TRADITIONAL strawberry Banana smoothie, you will do without the blueberries and oatmeal. In a typical strawberry banana smoothie, you would only use strawberries, bananas, milk or water, ice, and sometimes sugar.
Storage and reblending
- How to store a smoothie: If you have some smoothie leftover that you want to store, you can do so by keeping it in the blender and simply storing it in the freezer. Keep it covered with the top to prevent any freezer burn.
- How to reblend the smoothie: Just add a little milk to the blender, and blend until smooth. Let the smoothie sit and unthaw for a while first to soften a bit then add in the milk and blend until nice and smooth.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can you use water if you’re lactose intolerant? Yes! You can replace the almond milk with water… just make sure you stick with the same amount.
- How long does this smoothie last? A smoothie can stay fresh for a few days. I wouldn’t wait too long to finish it off, 3 days tops.
- How to double this recipe? Just use double the amount of ingredients.
