Hey yall, it’s ya boy Jay coming at you with another bangin recipe. And it’s a recipe for what might be my favorite vegetable side dish, frozen mixed vegetables! Now, I know frozen vegetables seem like an easy thing to make right?

Yall probably asking yourselves, “Why he make a recipe for mixed vegetables?” Well, my YouTube subscribers have been begging me to create some good frozen vegetable recipes.

So lately I’ve been posting good easy-to-make frozen vegetable recipes showing yall how to make vegetable sides more enjoyable.

Why try this recipe?

  • Several nutrients: You get your nutrients from a variety of vegetables (string beans, lima beans, carrots, peas, and corn) all in one spoonful.
  • Tastes great with everything: Mixed vegetables taste great with pretty much any meat (chicken, turkey, steak, fish, and pork) you’re cooking for dinner, which is another reason they’re a good choice for a vegetable side.
  • Easy to make: They require little to no labor, unlike some fresh vegetables that take hours to cook and prepare. All you gotta do is throw em in a pot or skillet with a little water or broth, season them to your liking, and within minutes they’re ready to be served.

Tools:

  • Large Skillet: We’re making a nice amount of mixed vegetables here so make sure you use a large size skillet to cook the vegetables in.
  • Slotted Spoon: Use a slotted spoon to stir and serve the vegetables.
  • Measuring Cup: Use a measuring cup to accurately measure the broth.
  • Measuring Spoons: Make sure you have measuring spoons to get an accurate measurement of the seasonings.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • Vegetables: Mixed Vegetables
  • Liquid: Chicken Broth
  • Seasonings: Chicken Flavor Bouillon Cubes, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Dill Weed, and Black Pepper
  • Fat: Butter

How to make frozen vegetables the right way

Here are the three common issues I feel people have when cooking frozen vegetables… and why so many people never get it right.

  • Figuring out the best temperature to cook them at.
  • Determining how long to cook them.
  • Deciding what seasonings/spices to use to give the vegetables a good flavor!

The Best Size for a family of 4-6

Okay, so we’ll be using 1 lb (16oz) of frozen mixed vegetables for this recipe. Frozen veggies usually come in 1 and 2 lb bags, but if you’re unlucky and have trouble finding a 1 lb bag, just use half of a 2-lb bag.

The average household holds 4 to 6 people, so this 1 lb recipe will be more than enough to feed a family of 4 to 6 for dinner. Just for reference, you may see 16oz or 32oz on the bag. 16oz is obviously 1 lb, and 32oz is 2 lbs.

Sometimes, you might come across a 12oz bag of mixed vegetables. You can buy two 12-ounce bags, which will be 24 ounces, and use one and a half bags, which are 16 ounces. This is just another option if you can’t find a 16oz bag.

For a family of 8, you might want to pick up a 2 lb bag, especially if you’re foodies and love veggies. In that case, you will just double everything in the recipe except the broth.

The best seasonings to use

My followers are always emailing me asking, “What seasonings do you put in your veggies to make them pop?” Well, for mixed vegetables, I like to use chicken broth, chicken flavor bouillon cubes or salt, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper.

This combination of seasonings, along with butter, gives mixed vegetables an amazing flavor. I actually just had a friend over for dinner the other night who asked me what seasonings I used to make them taste so good.

He not only said they were flavorful but the best-mixed vegetables he’s ever had. He said most people don’t make them this good! Lol! That was further confirmation that the ingredients I use are the RIGHT ONES because he’s a picky eater!!!

Temperature and cooking time

As I stated earlier, the difficult part for some people is getting the cooking time right. You don’t want to overcook the vegetables to the point where they’re soft and mushy, but you don’t want them crunchy, either.

So cooking time matters!!! I cook them over medium-high heat for a good 10 minutes with a cup of broth, which is just the right amount of liquid to use so that most of it cooks out by the time they’re done.

See, frozen vegetables may seem like one of the easiest things to cook, but they’re very similar to rice in that—they seem simple, but very few people get it right! By the way, doesn’t it seem only Asian folk have mastered the art of cooking perfect rice?

Even when I go to renowned 5-star restaurants, I find that their rice is often mushy, overcooked, and underwhelming. What’s that all about?! Lol!

Key ingredients and alternatives

You don’t need many ingredients for mixed vegetables, but I want to touch on the key ingredients, mainly seasonings, and provide good alternatives if you don’t have one on hand.

  • CHICKEN BROTH: Chicken broth always provides more flavor. If you don’t have chicken broth, which I love, by the way, below are some other good alternatives you can use in place of it. By the way, try to go for low-sodium broth to consume less sodium.
  • Bouillon cubes + water: If you don’t have any chicken broth, you can just use water. Just use an extra bouillon cube, and you’ll pretty much have chicken broth.
  • Vegetable broth: We are making vegetables, right? So how could vegetable broth not make the list? Use vegetable broth if you don’t have chicken broth or bouillon cubes.
  • CHICKEN BOUILLON CUBES: This is one of the ingredients that gives my mixed vegetables the amazing flavor everyone raves about. It’s a very important ingredient, but below are some good substitutions if you don’t have any bouillon cubes on hand.
  • Seasoning salt: I usually use seasoning salt if I’ve run out of bouillon cubes. Trust me, the mixed vegetables will taste just as good, but sometimes I think they taste a little better when I use seasoning salt.
  • Adobo seasoning: Another all-purpose seasoning that I love and think tastes great on anything, but that’s why it’s an all-purpose seasoning. It will give the mixed vegetables a slightly different flavor than bouillon cubes, but it makes for a solid replacement if you don’t have seasoning salt.
  • Salt: If salt is all you have on hand, use it and know that you can never go wrong with salt. Lol! It doesn’t pack the flavor of the other seasonings, but it will provide “taste.”

Salt to taste

I just want to put this out for those of you who cant have or dont like a lot of salt or maybe salt sensitive. Salt to taste… which means to add a little salt at a time until the vegetables are seasoned to your liking.

Also, if you do opt to use salt, be mindful that it’s more potent than all-purpose seasonings. Salt is very strong, so if you replace the bouillon cubes, which are equivalent to 1 tbs of seasoning, start with a half tsp of salt to avoid it being too salty.

How to make mixed vegetables

  1.  Add broth to a pot or skillet over medium-high heat until it comes to a boil, then add in the mixed vegetables.
  2. Add in the butter and seasonings, then stir.
  3. Let it simmer until they’re nice and tender, about 8-10 minutes.

Main Dish Options:

Storage and reheating

  • How do you store mixed vegetables? Just make sure they’re tightly sealed with a lid, aluminum foil, or plastic wrap in a container or Tupperware dish and stored in the refrigerator.
  • How do you reheat them? You can reheat them in a microwave or the same way we cooked them; in a pot or skillet over medium heat until hot.

  1. For me, it was too salty, so I solved it by adding in another pound of veg after I tasted it and a tad of sugar to cut the salt and it was then fine- I would not use 2 bouillon… love your site.

  2. Thanks so much. This was so easy and delicious with my baked salmon. God bless you and your loved ones.💕🙏🏾

I admit, I was a bit skeptical that this would make much difference in how my frozen mixed veggies taste versus just heating them on the stove or in the microwave and adding some butter and seasoning, but I tried it because I wanted to spruce them up. It is a very good recipe. The texture was perfect.
Thanks for posting! I had a friend over for dinner, and she took the leftovers home for her lunch the next day.

  4. To drain or to not drain the juice? That’s my only question. I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to drain😩 still yummy drained.

    1. There usually isn’t much juice left when I make this recipe but that could be because our stoves/pots/pans are different. Doesn’t matter if you drain the juice or not.

  5. What a great side dish! I made this recipe for my children and they loved it, and even asked for more. Please continue with your great recipes!

  6. I used the Beef Better Than Boullion stuff and a cup of water because I didn’t have chicken broth and chicken boullion cubes. But with the seasonings and butter this is really good.

  7. This is SO good, but yet easy! I use applewood smoked sea salt instead of the bouillon cubes and throw in a couple of my fav all-purpose seasonings with some garlic pepper. I don’t even need meat; I can eat this alone. LOVE this recipe!
