Slow Cooker Smothered Turkey Wings

Tender, savory, soul food style Turkey Wings made to perfection. Slow-cooked in a crockpot with onions, peppers, and a finger-licking good gravy that’s to die for. This succulent, hearty, and delicious dish is perfect for brisk winter evenings.

Turkey Wings & Gravy In Slow Cooker

Hey guys, it’s Jay and I’m back with another soul food recipe. Today I’ll be showing you how I slow cook my turkey wings in a little ole crockpot. This dish is comfort food at its best.

And It’s the perfect dinner during cold winter months. If there was a picture next to the word “HEARTY”, there would be a plate of these savory bone-sucking turkey wings aside it!!! This recipe is a fan favorite and highly requested by family and friends – that’s just how amazingly delicious it is.

It’s also the perfect dinner to make when you’re busy or preoccupied with children around the house and don’t want to keep checking on the food every 20 minutes. Just sear these bad boys real good then throw em in the crockpot with some soup & broth.

And BAM… let em cook down until they’re tender, falling off the bones, and drowned in a savory soul food style gravy that’ll remind you of ya Grandma’s cookin’.

Watch Me Make It

Growing up on smothered turkey wings in the 90’s

Smothered turkey was a staple dish my parents often made for dinner, especially during the winter season. My mom made them a lot for Sunday dinner, which was a tradition in my family.

What I loved most about them was the savory turkey gravy. My parents used water to make the gravy, which is fine, but I found that using turkey broth is better because it enhances the turkey flavor.

Now you’re going to need a wet cloth close by while eating these bad boys because ya hands will be a hot, sticky mess from all the finger-licking action that’s gonna go down. The gravy gets all over your hands and makes them sticky! Lol!

Nana Alice & Aunt Pam hated big ole Wings

One thing I vividly remember from my childhood is how much my Nana and aunt Pam hated big jumbo wings. They would call them “BABY ARM” wings. Lol!

So whenever we went shopping for chicken or turkey, I would always hear them asking the meat man for smaller-sized wings. They always told me large meat was unnatural and filled with steroids, which I later found out was PARTLY and at times can be true!!!!

So I love to get small to medium-sized turkey wings, y’all make like them large, but I definitely go for the smaller wings. The idea of enormous turkey wings or drumsticks freaks me out because I’ve been convinced that it isn’t natural, but if you like them big, do you.

The benefit of slow-cooking smothered turkey wings

Cooking these in a slow cooker allows you to clean up around the house, take care of some parental duties, or chill to watch a game, show, or movie without having to check the food every 15-20 minutes. It’s not arduous either!

Once you get them in that crockpot, you just have to play the waiting game which is why it’s the perfect choice for dinner when you have a lot to do around the crib or just wanna have food done by the time you get off work.

Ingredients you’ll need:

  • Meat: Turkey wings, preferably medium.
  • Vegetable add-ins: Yellow onions, green bell peppers, and minced Garlic
  • Fat: Vegetable Oil and butter
  • Seasonings: Salt, garlic powder, onion powder, ground sage, dried thyme, dried rosemary, and black pepper

For the gravy

  • Liquid: Turkey Broth, low-sodium broth preferred.
  • Thickener: All-Purpose Flour.
  • Soup: Campbell’s Cream of Chicken.

Cookware & utensils you’ll need:

Searing the turkey wings

A question I get asked often is, “What’s the point of browning/searing the turkey wings before adding them to the crockpot?”. Here’s why you sear the turkey wings first.

  • Crisping the skin: Simmering turkey wings in a crockpot for 4 to 8 hours leaves the skin soggy, like wet tissue, which is undesirable. So, searing them so that when they’re done, the skin is not completely soft is one of the reasons for searing them before adding them to the crockpot.
  • Enhancing flavor: When you sear meat like chicken or turkey, you extract the fat, which is filled with flavor. So, deglazing all those juices and remnants at the bottom of the skillet after searing them and adding them to the crockpot helps add flavor to the dish.

Tips for success:

  • Pat the wings dry: If the wings are wet, make sure you pat them with a paper towel to ensure they’re dry before seasoning and searing them.
  • Sautéing the minced garlic: You can add the minced garlic to the crockpot. You don’t have to sauté it, but if you do, add it to the skillet with the onions and peppers just before they’re done, so it doesn’t burn.
  • Deglaze the bowl: If you seasoned the turkey wings in a dish or big bowl like I do, make sure to rinse it out with a little broth or water and add it to the crockpot. DON’T WASTE THAT SEASONING. I mix my slurry in the same bowl I used to season the turkey wings, which helps get out all the seasonings.

  • Stir everything: Give everything a nice stir before letting it cook, and after a few hours, to prevent the wings from sticking and to loosen the gravy.

What to serve smothered turkey wings with:

So some of you may be trying to think of something to make that tastes great with turkey wings. Here are some starch and vegetable sides I would recommend you make with your turkey wings.

  • White rice: I think white rice is probably the side dish people make the most to go with their turkey wings, especially smothered turkey wings, because nothing goes better with gravy than rice.
  • Egg noodles: Egg noodles, OMG… they TASTE SO GOOD with turkey wings and smothered with that savory turkey gravy? 2nd to none! One of my favorite things to eat with turkey wings and gravy.
  • Mashed potatoes: Come on… y’all know mashed potatoes had to make the list. Whenever you’re talking gravy mashed potatoes gonna be a part of the conversation. Mashed potatoes are the first thing people think of when you mention gravy. The only reason it’s not first on this list is because I think rice and egg noodles go better with turkey wings.
  • Green beans:  Green beans are the vegetable that goes great with anything, so you can’t go wrong here. They’re the best vegetables to eat with turkey wings in my opinion. I love how the two flavors taste together.
  • Sweet corn: These savory turkey wings will go great with some sweet buttery corn, OMG! That sweet savory effect… corn is probably my 2nd favorite veggie to eat with turkey wings.

Storage and reheating

  • How to store smothered turkey wings? Place the turkey wings in a Tupperware dish or a Ziploc bag, ensuring they’re tightly sealed, and then store them in the refrigerator.
  • Can you freeze turkey wings? Yes, of course! Place them in a ziploc bag, ensuring it’s sealed to prevent freezer burn, and store them in the freezer. They can stay fresh for up to 3+ months.
  • How to reheat the turkey wings in a microwave? Place the wings in a microwave-safe dish and set the microwave to 3 minutes. Flip the turkey wings over once 1 and a half minutes are remaining. Continue for an additional minute if it’s still not hot.
  • How to reheat the turkey wings in an oven? Scrape off the gravy from the turkey wings, place them on aluminum foil, and then bake them in the oven at 350°F until hot.
  • How do you loosen and reheat thick, gritty gravy? Gravy can become too thick and form lumps as it chills in the refrigerator. To fix this, place a skillet over low heat, add in the gravy and a couple of tablespoons of broth or water, and whisk until smooth and warm. Add as much broth or water as needed to restore the gravy to its previous form.

Slow Cooked Smothered Turkey Wings FAQs

  • Can you use other turkey parts, like turkey legs? Of course, you can use any turkey part you want, like the drumsticks, aka legs, a portion of the wings, or the wings like I’m using here. Just stick with the exact measurements, that’s all, and ensure that you’re using 2 to 3 lbs of turkey.
  • Do I have to use cream of chicken? NO!!! Sometimes when I bake my wings, I don’t use cream of chicken. I typically only use it when making them in the crockpot because the pressure produces a lot of liquid. I try to combat that by adding the cream of chicken for additional thickness to the gravy. Making turkey wings without the cream I found allows you to taste more of the turkey wing’s “turkey” flavor.
  • How long do smothered turkey wings last? 4-5 days in a refrigerator. I don’t wait too long to eat food because it loses its swag as time goes on. Lol!

  22. looks so good will try it

  23. I cooked this on slow cook in my cast iron Dutch pot in my Emeril Lagasse on medium low (325 degrees) for 3:30 hours and it came out delicious. A little broth added to the mixture cuts down on the extreme stickiness.
Next day for breakfast- a wing and some grits. Oh, my goodness!!

  24. Susan D Turner says:

Well unfortunately the turkey itself disappointed. The sauce and the method and everything was delicious but the turkey even though it was advertised as wings I suspect was actually drumsticks because they were huge. DH doesn’t care especially for turkey parts which I had no knowledge of. He only likes turkey breast meat which I didn’t know. He really liked the sauce and wondered if it might be good possibly with chicken which I think it would. I love turkey wings so I guess I’m going to have to sometime make it for myself when I can actually find the right turkey wings these were very strange

    1. I did it with chicken wings. It came out perfect

      1. Yes, you can definitely use pretty much all of these same ingredients for chicken or pork and it will be just as good.

  25. Susan D Turner says:

In the Crock-Pot even as we speak kind of a pain because I had to go out in the garden and harvest herbs but other than that it was great I will update after we taste them!

    1. I don’t care for Turkey and neither does my husband, but after trying this recipe, we enjoy Turkey at least 3x’s a month. Plus, it’s Incredibly Easy. Thanks gazillion times. I’m in love with this recipe!!

  27. Tonia Townsend says:

If I wanted to put them in the oven would I cooked them the same exact way, if not what modifications do I need to make

  28. Used your recipe to fix 1 wing, 1 thigh and 2 legs. After reading remarks I added 2/3 cup of Wild Rice Mix and just put everything in my 6 quart crockpot to cook. It took 6 hours on high for the legs to get to fall off the bone done. It was so good!

  29. Best tasting turkey wings ever! I even ate them for breakfast 😋

  30. AMAZING
    THANK YOU!!!

  31. I made this for Sunday dinner…#SUPERB!!!!

  34. Willie Stewart says:

I used this recipe, but did it with turkey necks! 😱. Also I didn’t have turkey broth so I substituted with chicken broth. This s*#t was delicious!!

  35. Steven Bennett says:

Jay I have a question. On your recipes where it says 1x 2x 3x only the meat portion amount changes.

For a 2x serving do I change all measurements by two? Example if a 1x measurement calls for 1/2 tablespoon of pepper is the 2x measurement 1 whole tablespoon of pepper?

Also I’m making your recipe for turkey wings I plan on using the 2x recipe instead of 10oz of cream of chicken am I using 20oz. Thank you much sir!

    1. PhillyboyJay Author says:

That’s an automatic generated feature on this recipe plugin card… I don’t go by that. I would just add a little more of each seasoning but not double it. Tell me how it comes out

  76. Pierlisia Harrington says:

The temperature is on high setting right? What if I want to cook it on low for how long

    1. I think about 6 hours on low should be good or until tender.

  77. I cooked this recipe – DELICIOUS without any deviation from the recipe or instructions!

    1. I used water instead of turkey broth. I made this putting approx 2/3 cup brown rice (uncooked) into bottom of crock pot also. Very tasty. Now I just put pork roast into crock pot w/rice. Look forward to eating it!! I put all spices w/about 2-3 tsp canola oil (instead of butter) along with roast, into plastic bag & shake to evenly coat & put in crock pot.

    2. Looks Delish, can’t wait to try PhillJay

  78. Tasha Dorsey says:

  82. I apologize if this is a silly question. Are the 4hrs low or high setting? If high (like I’m thinking), can I do 8hrs on low? Or is that not recommended? Thank you!

    1. I cooked them on high for 3.5 hours and super tender and near fall off the bone.
