This spinach dip recipe is the bomb!! This dip is creamy, smooth, and very addicting! Perfect for Super Bowl parties, baby showers, cocktail parties, and as a mid-day or midnight snack.
It’s late January and my Philadelphia Eagles just defeated the Washington Commanders and are now Superbowl bound. So I thought, what recipe can I post to my blog that would be a perfect additional to a SuperBowl party?
The first thing that came to mind was Spinach dip! One thing we all know about SuperBowl parties is dip is always on the menu. I dont care if it’s spinach dip, buffalo chicken dip, or cheese dip….
Dip has almost become synonymous with the SuperBowl. And for those of you wondering what the Superbowl is… it’s the last game of every NFL season between two of the leagues best teams that decides the champion for that year.
People gather together, typically at home with friends and family to watch the game even if they’re not a fan of the two teams playing. And light food like pizza, wingettes, snacks, soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, and dips are the common choice of food.
So what better time to share this easy delicious spinach dip with you guys since the Superbowl is less than 2 weeks away? So if you’re a sports fan, make sure to take this to your next SuperBowl party. It’s one of the best spinach dip recipes online!
What makes this a good recipe?
- Quick and easy: Extremely easy to make and takes under 30 minutes.
- The perfect midnight snack: This spinach dip is light on the stomach, making it a good late-night snack.
- Kid-friendly: This is surely away to get your kids to consume some spinach which has so many health benefits. Now its obviously not as healthy since is submerged in sour cream and mayo. But children will enjoy this dip with chips or nachos and it’s a healthier snack for sure.
What do people make spinach dip for, and what are the perfect occasions to bring spinach dip to?
Spinach dip is a light appetizer people serve at social gatherings such as Super Bowl parties, wedding recitals, cocktail parties, baby showers, or even family cookouts. But usually events where you bring light food and snacks to, like a birthday party.
People love serving dips like buffalo chicken dips at Superbowl parties and as I said, the Superbowl is right around the corner so I had to post this recipe. It’s the first thing I think of when I think of a social gathering where snacks and light food is served.
But you can make it for any occasion honestly. I wouldn’t bring it to a thanksgiving or Christmas dinner lol but it’s also perfect as a snack for kids to take to school for lunch or something you can take to work to smack on. Make it whenever you feel like it but these are common occassions.
My nana fell in love with this spinach dip!
I have this funny story that I absolutely have to share with yall! So Alice Mae who yall know I refer to as my nana because I’ve mentioned her plenty of times on this blog and even titled recipes after her loved my spinach dip.
She and my grandma Gwen who is Alice Mae daughter both played the biggest role in me developing a love for cooking. They were the two best cooks on my father’s side of my family even though almost everyone could cook.
So when they give me compliments on my food or would have foodgasms, I knew I put my foot in it because they were great cooks themselves and big critics. Trust me, they were not easy to satisfy and would always find something wrong with everything they ate. Lol!
I use to always go see my nana and whenever I did, it seems I would always end up spending a night or staying for a few days until I was ready to go home. As she got older, and didn’t like to cook as much, I would bring her food everytime I came to visit her.
I loved spending time with her because my nana was different… she was a real life Madea. Sassy, funny, and didn’t take no sh%^t! I loved our conversations and enjoyed spending time with her more than my own friends! Lol!
Anyway, one day during the summer of 2014, I had made some spinach dip and decided to bring some to her house one afternoon. I sat in her room as we talked and ate some spinach dip with some wheat thins and she looked at me like I was crazy.
She asked, “What’s that? I said, “Spinach dip! You don’t know what Spinach dip is”? And she shook her head with a look of disgust! I was really surprised she never heard of spinach dip at 83 years old.
What’s was so funny is how I asked if she wanted some and she looked at me like I was crazy. She was so disturbed by the idea of spinach being eaten with sour cream and mayo. I remember her asking “What you put it in”? I said mayo and sour cream.
Then she proceeded to stare at me as i tore it up with my wheat thins. Her face went from disgust to intrigue to curiosity to hunger. Then she said, “Let me try one I’m hungry” Lmbbo!!!!
And when I tell you, she hadn’t even finished the first wheat thin of dip before saying “Uhn uhn uhn uhn” and asking for more, I am not lying. I was cracking up so bad!
It’s the fact that one minute she looked at me in disgust and was so confused by the idea of mixing mayo with spinach and the next minute she was in love with it after trying it. Also how she slowly went from disgust to interest in trying it after she saw how much I was enjoying it.
This memory will never not make me laugh. Just one of the many memories I have of this crazy nana of mine. Anyway let me get to the ingredients you’ll need and how I like to make my spinach dip which is sort of different from your typical spinach dip.
Ingredients You’ll Need:
- Spinach: Frozen Spinach
- Cheese: Parmesan Cheese
- Condiments: Sour Cream and Mayonnaise
- Seasonings: Knorr Vegetable Recipe Mix, Salt, and Black Pepper
Equipment:
- Large skillet: We’re making a nice amount of spinach dip so a large skillet is needed to cook out the liquid and melt the sour cream and cheese.
- Big spoon: Make sure you have a big spoon to stir and combine everything.
- Serving Bowl: We’ll use this to combine everything in and serve the spinach from.
- Measuring Cups: Measuring cups are used to accurately measure the sour cream, mayo, and cheese.
- Measuring Spoons: Use measuring spoons to accurately measure the seasonings.
Benefits of using frozen spinach over fresh spinach!
- Cheaper: You get more for your money because it’s typically cheaper. You will have to buy 3 to 4 bags of baby spinach to equal the amount of spinach that comes in a frozen bag of spinach.
- The flavor: It enhances the spinach dip because frozen spinach is concentrated with spinach flavor.
- Less preparation: Frozen spinach also requires less preparation because it’s already cooked and chopped up. You just steam it until the water dries out. With fresh spinach not only do you have to chop it up but cook it in water until it wilts.
Why do you add sour cream while the spinach is simmering in the skillet?
Stirring the sour cream into the spinach over medium heat does two things: it makes it easier to remove lumps that can sometimes be found in sour cream, it makes it smoother, and it works as an emulsifier, which helps the parmesan cheese melt.
We all know parmesan cheese is like the black sheep in the cheese family. Its not a good melting cheese and remember I said under my Alfredo Sauce Recipe how cream cheese helps it melt, well sour cream has sort of the same effect.
Salt to taste
Ok so I find that the spinach dip dont hit the way I want it to without adding a little salt. Salt is a great flavor enhancer and makes everything taste better and that’s definitely the case with spinach dip.
The Knorr vegetable recipe mix has sodium in it and definitely seasons the spinach dip and gives it a nice flavor, however, I’ve had people on occasion ask for salt and I’ve found myself wanting to add a little.
So what I’d advise you to do is give it a taste after you combine everything, and then SALT TO TASTE, which means add a little salt at a time and as much as you feel you need to meet your desired taste.
I found that for the amount of spinach dip I’m making, a 1/2 tsp of salt does the job but add as much as you want or NONE at all. Some people didn’t think it needed any salt.
Also, be mindful that if you’re making this for a social gathering or get together like I am for the SuperBowl for example, its best to not use salt at all because some people dont like a lot of salt or simply cant have it due to health reasons.
So I recommend making it as the recipes instructs and allowing people to add salt if they feel the need to to their own serving of spinach dip. Just wanted to explain what salt to taste mean for those wondering. Now onto how to make spinach dip.
How to make spinach dip

- CHILL: Cover with plastic wrap and store in the refrigerator to chill.
Tips for best results:
- Make ahead of time: Make 8 hours before serving for best results. Letting it rest in the refrigerator gives all the ingredients time to marry and come together, resulting in a much better-tasting spinach dip and gives it time to stiffen a bit and chill.
- Make sure it’s dry as possible: I can’t emphasize how important the first step is. If you stir your ingredients into wet spinach, that liquid will dilute the taste and it wont taste nearly as good as it should. So make sure you steam the spinach as long as you need to steam out all the liquid. You want it dry as possible.
- Remove stems if any: Depending on the spinach you get, you may see some stems. Remove as many hard pieces of stems as possible after steaming the spinach. The last thing you want to do is chew on little pieces of spinach stems or have to remove them from the dip as you’re eating it.

- For a smoother Spinach dip: Knorr’s vegetable recipe mix has dried onions, peas, carrots, and tomatoes in it. For a smoother spinach dip, remove some of the red pieces which are the dried tomatoes. I say this because some people complained about it making the spinach dip lumpy. If you’re one of those people, just remove some of the red-dried tomatoes before stirring in the mayo.

Serving Suggestions:
- Wheat thins: If you’re looking for advice on what to eat your spinach dip with, I recommend eating it with wheat thins. OMG! So good! Nothing goes better with spinach dip, in my opinion, than wheat thins, which can be found at your local grocery store.
- Tortitos: Tortitos are also really good with spinach dip. Another chip commonly eaten with spinach dip.
- Broccoli, Cucumbers and carrots: Broccoli, cucumbers, and Carrots are a few vegetables we love to stick in our dressings and dips and they also taste great with Spinach dip. So they are an option if you want to go the healthy route and opt for vegetables over chips and crackers.
How long does it take to steam out the juice and get the spinach dry?
It really just depends on the pack of spinach you buy and how much liquid is in it. If you’re using frozen spinach you had sitting in your freezer, it will take longer then frozen spinach you just bought from the store that maybe already thawed out. It’s taken 15 minutes for me and sometimes as long as 30.
How and where do you store spinach dip?
I place the serving bowl of spinach dip in the refrigerator after wrapping it with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. You can also place it in a Tupperware dish and seal it with a lid.
How long does spinach dip last if kept stored in the refrigerator?
When it comes to things like salads, dips, or anything that has mayonnaise in it, I always recommend eating it in 3 days. After 3 days, food with mayonnaise in it just loses its swag, and the quality of taste goes downhill from that point on.
If you want to make a lot for a big social gathering party or event, how would you double the recipe?
Very simple! For spinach dip, all you have to do is simply double, triple, or quadruple the recipe. Stick with the same ingredients; just use 2, 3, or 4 times the amount for a larger dip.
