Let me start with a public service announcement!!! This oven-baked steak is dangerously addicting and will keep you wanting more. It’s so freaking delicious; words can’t do it any justice.
It’s perfectly seasoned, super tender, and so darn flavorful. The sauce and red potatoes make it hearty and comforting. So hit the brakes if you’ve been looking for a good baked steak recipe.
Oven-baked steak can’t get any better than this!
Why I Love This Recipe
I love steak like most of you do, so that’s not much of a surprise. But I especially love it very tender and smothered in gravy.

We’re going to do something a little different with this baked steak, though. Instead of gravy, we’re going to coat it with A1 steak sauce.
Before I learned to make gravy, I’d smother my steak in A1 sauce. I remember making this for my mother when I was a teenager.
My grandma Val, who never cooked, asked me to bake some steak. Lol! I remember baking it and feeling like it was missing something.
So I looked in my grandma’s cabinet and saw a bottle of A1 sauce. I’d never tried it before, so I poured a little into my palm.
I thought it had an interesting taste and was skeptical about using it. But I figured it would work since it was made for steak, after all.
It turned out great! I really enjoyed it, and my mother was impressed when I let her try some.
So this recipe sort of holds a special place in my heart. It was one of the first things I made that I remember my family loving.

When To Serve Oven-Baked Steak
This oven-baked steak is perfect for a chilly fall evening. It’s hearty and makes a great midweek family dinner.
It’s a good way to switch things up when you’re tired of the same old dinners. Serve it with your favorite sides for a filling meal your family will love.
I also think it makes a simple romantic dinner for two. You do not need an over-the-top meal to impress your partner.
Just serve this with a good side vegetable like asparagus. It’ll fill them up and set the mood for the rest of the night.
Recipe Ingredients
- Boneless chuck steak: Chuck steak is ideal for recipes like this. It’s rich in flavor, high in fat, and gets tender with slow cooking. It’s also affordable, so you get more for your buck.
- Red Potatoes: I use red potatoes for their creamy texture and buttery flavor. They’re waxy and low in starch, which helps them hold their shape as they bake. Yukon Golds are just as delicious and make a great alternative.
- Water: Use a little water to moisten the steak and keep it from sticking.
- Yellow Onions: I like to keep it simple with standard yellow onions.
- Minced garlic: You simply can’t cook steak without using some sort of garlic. Minced garlic adds a savory kick and brings everything together.
- Worcestershire Sauce: I use Worcestershire sauce whenever I’m cooking beef or steak. It enhances and deepens the natural taste of red meat.
- A1 Steak Sauce: A1 Steak Sauce gives this dish its signature flavor.
- Seasonings: Seasoning salt, Garlic Powder, Onion Powder, Italian Seasoning, Thyme, and black pepper are the perfect seasoning blend for steak.

Tip for Best Results:
- Cutting the steak: Slice steak into smaller pieces once it becomes partially frozen. It’s hard to slice when it’s thawed because it’s flimsy and slippery.
- Marinate the steak: Pat the steak dry, then place it in a large mixing bowl. Add the seasonings, chopped onions, minced garlic, and Worcestershire sauce. Toss well, cover, and refrigerate for 8–24 hours.

Storage and reheating
- How to store it: Place leftovers in a Tupperware bowl or leave them in the baking dish. Cover with a lid, plastic wrap, or aluminum foil, then refrigerate.
- Can you freeze it? Yes, you can freeze this dish! Store it in a freezer-safe Ziploc bag or airtight container. Seal it tightly to help prevent freezer burn.
- How to reheat it in a skillet: Place the steak and potatoes in a skillet over medium heat. Cook for about 10 minutes, or until heated through.
- How to reheat it in the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Heat for 25–30 minutes.
- How to reheat it in a microwave: Place the steak in a microwave-safe dish and heat for about 2 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Can you use a different cut of steak? Yes, you can use blade steak or boneless beef short ribs as alternatives to chuck steak. These cuts work well with slow cooking and can become tender as they bake.
- Can you use russet potatoes instead of red potatoes? Russet potatoes are high in starch and don’t hold their shape well when baked. They’ll break down into mush and soak up the juices that keep the steak moist. Stick with waxy, low-starch potatoes like red potatoes or Yukon Golds.
- Can you replace the water with beef broth? I don’t recommend it. The steak is already seasoned with seasoning salt and A1 sauce. Adding beef broth, which is high in sodium, may make the steak too salty.
- How do you know when the steak is done? For this recipe, you want the steak to be really tender. You’ll know it’s tender when you can cut it without a knife.

Ok y’all, so you have pretty much all the information you need now to perfect this recipe. It’s a very simple dish, but it’s as good as baked steak can get.
