If you think frozen spinach can’t taste as good as fresh, this recipe here will surely change your mind. Frozen Spinach isn’t suppose to be this good folks but it is so give this recipe a shot. It’s the perfect vegetable side dish to a delicious dinner.

Can you believe I never liked spinach?

Hey guys, it’s ya boy Jay and I gotta admit… I’m pretty pumped to share this recipe with yall. Listen, I never liked spinach, NEVER!!! I probably ate it a handful of times my entire life.

It just didn’t agree with my picky, weird taste buds, and that always bothered me because spinach has a lot of nutrients I could benefit from. So there were times I actually wished I liked it. Lol!

Health benefits of spinach

Ok so let me get into some of the benefits of eating spinach and the particular nutrients it provides us with. Ok so Spinach is a great source of IRON which is good for anemic people like myself who get cold easily! Lol!

It’s a great source of CALCIUM, which strengthens bones and teeth; and it also contains nutrients that help to prevent ASTHMA and CANCER, both of which happens to run in my family unfortunately.

I’m sure yall can understand why I took an issue with my taste buds not getting along with Spinach now right? Lol! I was missing out on a lot of health benefits simply because I hated the taste of Spinach.

So what I decided to do was think of something I could eat with it or put in it to make it easier to stomach! So I started by thinking of condiments and ingredients I could add to my spinach that would change the taste and make it more agreeable with my taste buds.

After a little experimenting, I found the perfect combination of ingredients that made eating spinach a more enjoyable experience for me. I’m happy to say me and spinach are besties now. Haha!

Story on how I created this recipe

Let me tell yall how the thought of making a Spinach recipe even came about! I was in the freezer aisle of a supermarket picking up vegetables for other recipes I was planning to make this month, when the idea to create a frozen spinach recipe popped in my head.

I saw a bag of frozen spinach, just sitting on the top rack next to the frozen broccoli I bought, looking at me like a helpless orphan begging to be taken home! Lol!

That’s when I thought to myself, “I don’t like Spinach but it’s important that I eat it so let me buy a few bags and see what I can do with it.” And almost instantly I started thinking of condiments I enjoy that might go well with Spinach.

Key ingredients I like to use

  • Apple cider vinegar: I use this for it’s tanginess and mild Apple flavor. This is easily the STAR of the show, the GAME CHANGER and most important ingredient.

Without the Vinegar, the show gets cancelled because it’s who everyone comes to see. In other words, it’s the ingredient that made it possible for my taste buds to accept the Spinach! Lol!

You can use white vinegar if you don’t have Apple Cider Vinegar, but it won’t have that same burst of cider flavor which does so much for the Spinach
  • Chicken broth: I don’t know if yall notice this or not but chicken broth is almost on every list of ingredients for all my vegetable recipes.

The flavor of chicken just goes so well with vegetables and that’s why Im always using chicken broth or bouillon cubes to season and steam my frozen veggies. And don’t worry, the flavor isn’t overwhelming and the CHICKEN FLAVOR don’t taste exactly like chicken.

It has more of a artificial chicken flavor, sorta like the little silver pack of seasoning you find in Murachan or Nissan TOP RAMEN noodle soup.

Using vegetable broth or water is completely fine and a good option if you don’t have any chicken broth on hand. Just be mindful that vegetable broth is saltier.
  • Seasoning salt: I love seasoning salt, what black person doesn’t! Lol! There’s not a seasoning in the market that gives vegetables the flavor seasoning slat does. I put it in my collard greens, green beans, Spinach, and a lot more stuff.

If I don’t have seasoning salt which is an all purpose seasoning, I’ll use either chicken bouillon seasoning/cubes, or Adobo. And if you don’t have any of those seasonings, you can never go wrong with salt!

*Since creating this recipe I’ve made one update. I now just use salt instead of seasoning salt because it’s obviously more potent and I just think it’s the best option now for spinach.*
  • Garlic and onion powder: Garlic and onion powder are like an unbeatable tag team wrestling group that can’t be beat! Probably our favorite seasoning combo.

I mean, we all use both on almost everything right because the combination of garlic and onion just makes everything taste so good so I don’t need to explain why I use both of these seasonings.

They do the same thing for this spinach that they do in conjunction for chicken, turkey, fish, pork and everything else we season with them. If you don’t have any garlic powder you can use garlic paste or minced garlic.

The flavor the vinegar and broth gives the spinach is second to none!!! It came out so juicy, flavorful, and tangy. And the seasonings I mentioned above are seasonings you all have in your kitchen cabinets and are easy to find at your local grocery store.

All these ingredients go perfectly with spinach and is why it’s a joy for me to eat it now which I can’t say was always the case! Lol! I got the idea to use Apple cider vinegar when I was creating other frozen vegetable recipes and it’s the best decision I could have made.

I thought if it taste good in collard greens and green beans than I’m sure it will do the same thing for Spinach and I was right! So now it’s a MUST HAVE whenever I decided to make spinach.

How to make frozen spinach

1. Add broth to a pot or skillet over heat until it comes to a boil then add in the spinach.

2. Add in your butter and seasonings, then stir.

3. Let it simmer until it’s nice and tender, about 8-10 minutes.

Well guys, I’m happy to say now that eating spinach no longer feels like a task. I actually make it frequently now and look forward to eating it for dinner.

A lot of folks don’t care for frozen vegetables because they say they’re bland and have no taste which is partially true. I think the reason for that is them being in ice for a long time which takes from the natural favor of the veggies.

Btw you can use these same ingredients for fresh spinach as well. Anyway guys, try this recipe and let me know how you like it in the comment section below.

Enjoy, later!

    1. Just scoop it out and serve. It’s ok if there is a little or a lot of broth left, although there shouldn’t be too much broth remaining and yes it does absorb some of the broth.

  2. I love creamed spinach not wanting to take the time to make and found this. The flavors are excellent!! Thank you.

  3. I made this to have on some pasta and it was great! I added a bit of olive oil and grated cheese on top as garnish. I was happy to find a way of making frozen vegetables taste great, thanks!

    1. Jay you are the man! Who knew that you could make spinach taste this good? I followed your recipe, explicitly, and it blew my socks off. God bless you for spreading the word.

  4. This was super tasty and couldn’t be easier! It’s so nice to have an easy (vegan-friendly) spinach recipe that’s ready in 10-15 minutes. It was a great side dish with roasted pork tenderloin, but would go well with just about anything. It’s very flavorful without having a particular spice profile, which makes it very versatile. Next time, I might reduce the broth to 1/2 cup, since there’s already plenty of water on the frozen spinach. But the extra liquid wasn’t really an issue— I just served it with a slotted spoon. Thanks for a quick and easy frozen veggie side dish!

  5. Whew chile!!! You better come thru with this recipe! This is so darn good, thank you for this gem. No more bland frozen spinach!! Yum yum 😋!!

  6. I am assuming that the broth is absorbed by the spinach and it won’t be soupy?
Also, on your photo, what do you have sprinkled on top? It looks like cheese but there’s no cheese in the recipe.

  7. Was better than any other cooked spinach I’ve ever had. This makes cooked spinach tolerable for me. It never has been before. So, great recipe!

  8. The most flavorful spinach I’ve ever made! I used vegetable broth and a dairy free butter alternative and it came out wonderfully. Loved the touch of vinegar. I will make this again and again. Thank you!!

    1. My mom used can spinach she added garlic and white vinegar, didn’t like it when I was a kid but I like it at 50years later !!!
